In terms of the recipes I've received from my sister, this has to be the oldest. I think 1988 may have been the year of its initial transmission. So hey, if you can't get frozen lemonade concentrate anymore, my bad.
I've taken this to parties and had good reports, but seriously, I don't think I've made it since 1990 so I have no idea if I'd actually be prepared to serve or eat it anymore. Here's the short & sweet of it.
1 6 oz can frozen orange juice concentrate
1 6 oz can frozen lemonade concentrate
1 20 oz can crushed pineapple with juice
2 10 oz pkgs frozen strawberries with juice
3 large bananas, sliced
2 1/2 c water
3/4 c sugar
Mix, freeze, and move to refrigerator 2-3 hours before serving.
Now that I read this again I realize it's basically to a smoothie what a granita is to a sorbet. That's mixing, folks, not blending. It's supposed to have strawberry, pineapple, and banana chunks in it. I will warn you though, where I've had the most problem with it has been the freezing/defrosting stage. I always have it too solid or too melted. I never seem to manage the balance though I know it can be done. Maybe my problem was in not serving it in some sort of chilled container, I don't know.
Though, of course, the obvious answer to THAT is the one thing I didn't have the budget to be doing to this recipe back in 1990: alcohol. I'm thinking that a generous addition of either rum or kirsch might be just the trick. Not only will it keep it from freezing too solidly, you really won't care if the flavor isn't up to my ancient and decrepit memory. If you try it, let me know? And let me know what varietal of alcohol you use. And how much.
